Trash Collection Services in the City of Kirksville

Trash Collection is mandatory in Kirksville. Fines may be levied against citizens who have their trash in front of or behind their house for an extended period. Persons who illegally dump their trash in commercial dumpsters or on the road sides will be subject to fines.

Veolia Environmental Services of Macon, MO is the carrier for trash, recycling and yard waste collection for all Kirksville residents. There is no charge for the recycling and no limit to the amount that can be recycled.

Under this system, trash collection costs $6.00 per month. The City of Kirksville adds this charge to water bills, which are mailed to water customers every other month.

You may dispose of one bag or can of trash, up to 33 gallons in size or 40 pounds in weight per week with no additional charge. The lid on the trash can must be able to close

If you wish to dispose of more than one bag or can per week, you must purchase a $1.00 sticker and place it on the bag or can. Keep in mind, any bags or cans that weigh over 40 pounds or are larger than a 33 gallons can not be collected by the trash hauler. If you have more than this, separate your trash into more than one bag or can and put a sticker on the second bag or can. The trash stickers are available from your trash hauler or from Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, or the Ice House.

City of Kirksville Curbside Recycling Program

 

Keep in mind, there is NO CHARGE and NO LIMIT for recyclable items.


You may place an unlimited number of transparent bags at the curbside for recycling.


Place recycled items in transparent (clear or colored) plastic bags items which qualify for recycling.

Glass

Glass items are no longer being accepted for recycling. Please dispose of glass with regular household trash. Glass may be recycled at Truman State University Recycling Center, located at the Delaney-Baldwin Complex on the corner of Franklin and LaHarpe streets.  The center is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. A 24-hour drop box is also available. 

Plastic

All clean plastic can be recycled. Be sure to rinse and remove the lid before placing in a transparent recycling bag. Crushing will help save space.

Metal Cans

All types of metal cans are acceptable (aluminum, steel, and tin). Rinse the cans, remove the labels, and place in a transparent recycling bag. Crushing will help save space.

Chipboard - (food boxes)

Chipboard can be flattened and placed in a transparent recycling bag. Chipboard includes Kleenex boxes, cereal boxes, tea boxes, all processed food boxes, shoe boxes, and most other non-corrugated cardboard in the house. DO NOT INCLUDE PAPER THAT IS DIRTY WITH FOOD, LIKE PAPER PLATES, PIZZA BOXES, DONUT BOXES, ETC.

Note: All metal, plastic and chipboard can be mixed in the same transparent bag.

Recycled Paper

Make sure that all paper products are kept dry.

Newspaper

Place newspapers in a grocery sack, cardboard box, or bundle them together. All inserts that come in your paper are also acceptable.

Mixed Paper

Magazines, catalogs, mixed colored paper, junk mail, etc. Please place your magazines and catalogs with your newsprint.

Corrugated Cardboard

Break down all corrugated cardboard boxes and bundle them together.

Yard Waste Removal

Yard waste is collected ten months out of the year (every month except January and February) during the last full week (M-F) of the month.   Yard waste must be placed at the curb for collection by 6:30 a.m. on your regular trash pickup day. 

Citizens are encouraged to place yard waste in bio-degradable bags or in 33-gallon or less cans, but until further notice the black plastic bags are suitable.  Yard waste may also be placed loosely in a cardboard box.  Please be sure that the bags or cans weigh less than 40 pounds.  Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, grass and small twigs and clippings.  Yard waste will be collected by a truck different from the one that picks up your trash, so please be sure to separate your bags and/or cans so that they may not be confused.
