At this season of peace, harmony and goodwill, we are grateful for the opportunity to familiarize you with the Annual Adopt A Child Christmas Program for Adair County children. The Adopt-A-Child Christmas program is sponsored by KTUF Radio Station, Adair County Family Services, and the Kirksville Fire Department. This program is designed to provide a special Christmas gift for some 300 children in Adair County who otherwise, in some cases, might not have a gift. The Adair County Family Services office screens the children for the program utilizing foodstamp guidelines for children 0-16 years of age. Names of children 0-11 years of age, and the gift they wish to receive, are then taken to the KTUF radio station where those names (first names only) and requested gifts are read over the radio for citizens, etc., to call into the radio station and "adopt" the child. The maximum dollar amount for the gift is $25. We ask that the gift purchased be as close to this amount as possible, as all the participants receive their gifts at the party and see what the others get. The gifts are purchased by those adopting the child and taken to the Central Fire Station (601 South Franklin) where they are wrapped for distribution

Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity (KCOM) provides children 12-16 years of age with a party and a shopping spree. A fraternity student is assigned to a child in which that child is given $25 and taken on a shopping spree where they may purchase items for themselves or their family. A party is also provided for the children (ages 0-11) and their families with Santa arriving on a fire truck to distribute the gifts to the children. Refreshments (homemade cookies), etc., are served during the party and any extra or donated items are given out to the children. This program is community-supported through donations for the gifts as well as the "stockings" which are put together with free items from the community. There are many ways to be a part of the program. You may choose to adopt a child(ren), donate wrapping paper, donation of items for the homemade stockings, donation of cookies for the party, or through a financial contribution to the program which is utilized to buy delinquent gifts, door prizes, etc. The return to you through this program is very great.
