The Burn Building or Smoke House as it is called, enables instructor's and students to develop realistic scenarios with building. Simulated fires through use of smoke generators as well as live burning materials are utilized in this building for scenarios.

Instrumented structural fire fighting exercises for the purpose of experiencing and quantifying, in an macroscopic fashion, the growth and spread of fires, as well as the hostile environment of building fires. During these exercises, specific training needs are investigated. In addition, given the very complex and hazardous environments, issues related to the fire fighter safety and protection are identified during fire suppression activities.

Both general and operational features of burn buildings, including general building design, instrumentation, general usage and in-service reliability of various training props, safety measures, realism and versatility of training (both required and achievable), alternative fuel considerations, durability and reliability of construction materials, and environmental impacts of live fire training are achieved. Information on both conventional and state-of-the-art techniques are gathered from the burn facility and practicing fire suppression personnel.
