Text Box: The City of Kirksville is situated in some of the most beautiful country in all of the Midwest and is a unique community. As the County seat of Adair County, Kirksville is the largest city for more than 60 miles. The professional and team oriented Kirksville Police Department, which is housed in a new building, offers a variety of career opportunities including, SWAT, Lake/Boat Patrol, Field Training Officer, Community Police/Foot Patrol, School Resource Officer, and Detective.

Starting Salary: POST $25,106 Top Salary: $27,435
                            Non POST $24,329
 
Benefits Include:
 
Health Insurance: Provided at no cost to the employee. Dependant coverage is optional. The City will pay 50% of the dependent premium. The Epoch Group is our current Third Party Administrator.
 
Dental Insurance: Provided at no cost to the employee. City will pay 50% of the dependent premium. The Epoch Group is our current Third Party Administrator. 
 
Life Insurance: Provided at no cost to the employee in an amount equal to the officer’s annual salary. Jefferson Pilot Financial Services is our current provider.
 
Holidays: Officers receive holiday compensation for ten holidays per year or may schedule alternate days off upon approval of the supervisor.
 
Vacation Leave: Officers accrue 80 hours of vacation leave following one year of employment.
 
Sick Leave: Officers accrue eight hours of sick leave per month.
 
Personal Days: Officers are allowed 3 personal days per year. When taken, these days are subtracted from accrued leave.
 
Retirement: The City provides LAGERS (Local Government Employees Retirement System) benefits to employees at no cost to the officer.
 
Deferred Compensation Plan: A deferred compensation plan toward retirement is offered to officers following six months of employment.
 
Uniforms: All uniforms and uniform accessories are provided by the Police Department. Cleaning of uniforms is provided by the Department. Officers are allowed $300 per year for uniform replacements.
 
Weapon: Officers are issued one duty weapon, the 40 caliber Glock.
 
The Application Pre-Requisites
 
Be at least twenty-one (21) years old on day of appointment to police officer position.
 
Graduated from high school or must have a high school equivalency diploma
 
Valid Drivers License
No felony convictions
 
Prefer (not required) POST certified applicants.
 
 
The Selection Process
 
Job Application. Preliminary applications are distributed by the Missouri Career Center located at 2105 East Normal Street.
 
Written Exam. A written exam may be administered to those candidates who do NOT possess POST certification. No previous knowledge of law enforcement is necessary to take the exam.
 
Physical Agility. A physical agility test is given to test and score the applicant’s physical abilities to perform the duties of a police officer.
Oral Interview. An oral interview board (of three or more interviewers) is conducted wherein the applicant is asked several questions relating to his/her interest and abilities in the law enforcement field. Dress attire is required.
 
Background Check. The applicant will complete the necessary forms and an extensive background check is undertaken. Interviews with friends, previous employers, co-workers, neighbors, teachers and references will be conducted.
 
Second Interview. A second interview may take place after the background check.
 
Computer Voice Stress Analyzer. Similar to a polygraph.
 
Conditional Job Offer. The successful candidate will receive a conditional job offer. This job offer is based on a successful:
 
Psychologoical Exam and Interview. This is conducted at the City’s expense with a licensed practitioner.
 
Physical Exam. This is also conducted at the City’s expense by a licensed physician.
 
Drug Screen. Self-explanatory.
