Utility Maintenance

This division is responsible for water and sewage as it flows to and from homes and businesses. The primary responsibility of this division is to deliver quality, safe water. Water is currently supplied to nearly 6,800 customers within the city, and another 3,000 customers in greater Adair County at a rate of 2.9 million gallons each day.  There are over 155 miles of water lines, over 100 miles of sewer mains, and over 700 fire hydrants in Kirksville that are serviced by this division. The City currently maintains water mains, fire hydrants, valves, and service lines up to the curb shut-off but not beyond that point. The City also maintains the sewer mains and manholes, but no service lines or taps.

Other responsibilities include operation of the sewer system, or "collection system", which is cleaned and videoed annually with jetting and camera equipment. In addition, this division provides repair services 24 hours a day, seven day a week.

Other Division Duties include:

Water Related Duties:  Rebuilding and replacing aging water mains, mapping, record keeping of valves, taps, and hydrants, utility locating for water and sewer mains, service lines, and manholes; assistance to contractors with water taps, water main flushing and flow testing (for water quality and fire protection), boil advisories of drinking water, sampling, valve repairs, hydrant repairs, and service line repairs (up to and including curb stop valves).

Sewer Related Duties:  Manhole repairs, sewer back-ups, root cutting in sewer mains, video inspection, dye testing, and smoke testing.
